With about 800 participants from 18 middle schools and junior highs, the annual Turlock Junior High School Relay Meet had another good run, with many athletes breaking personal times while others smashed meet records. In its 30th year, the meet was held at the renovated Debely Stadium on Friday afternoon, with the athletes competing in only relay events with the exception of the open 1,600-meter run.

“We were not surprised to see so many records broken,” said Ardie Feucht, the TJHS track coach who also coordinated the event.

Medals were awarded to the top three teams in each race or field event. Though there were no official team scores recorded, Feucht said the TJHS team “had some very strong performances and seemed to dominate overall.”

Some of the highlights include Hughson setting two records in the sprint medley relay (2 minutes, 0.25 seconds) and the long jump (42 feet, 5 inches), an event that requires three athletes from one team to combine their best attempts for a team total. Roosevelt eighth grader Fermin Chaidez ran the 1600 in a blazing 5 minutes, 01.12 seconds to set a meet record.
