After a one loss regular season, the Modesto Twins have earned the right to compete in this year’s Babe Ruth Central Valley State Tournament which begins on Thursday in Hollister.

The Twins, who won the state tournament in 2008, 2009, and 2010, will face Tracy in the first round of the five-team, double elimination tournament. Whichever team claims the state crown will advance to the Southwest Regional Tournament in Watsonville on July 12. Modesto Babe Ruth hosted last year’s regional tournament, where the Twins finished third.

“We’re pretty confident. We have a lot of depth and team speed,” Twins coach Bobby Soderberg said. “We think we can handle going deep into a tournament and that we have the pitching to carry us.”

The Twins’ roster includes recent Pitman High graduate A.J. Derr, recent Turlock Christian High graduate John Westberg, recent Hilmar High graduate Matt Tyler, current California State University, Stanislaus player Clayton Miller, and current Merced Junior College player Tyler Herd.

Thursday’s game against Tracy will begin at 4 p.m. and will be played at Veteran Memorial Park.
