The Tournament of Champions is a tough round of play, but the Turlock National Little League Minors Redwings are taking it one game at a time, and it seems to be working for them.

The Redwings traveled all the way to Coarsegold field, where the Yosemite squad plays, and after four straight games they managed to come out with a 3-1 record. Their most recent contest, a 14-8 win over Mariposa on Tuesday.

Mason Helwick notched a grand slam, a double, a base hit and five RBI in Monday’s 10-8 win over Yosemite prior to Tuesday’s victory.

“Amazing game,” said Redwings manager Michele Helwick about their two-run victory.

Before that, the Redwings toppled Mariposa, 12-2, in Saturday’s opener followed by a 16-0 loss to Los Banos on Sunday.

“Los Banos is tough. Our kids are hungry though, one game at a time,” said Helwick.

In Tuesday’s game, Mariposa went up 3-0 early on the Redwings, but they followed up with a five-run rally in the bottom half of the first and ended up holding on to the lead.

The six-run difference ended it by the sixth.

“We scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, three in the second and fourth. The game was called since we were ahead by the sixth and they couldn’t come back,” Helwick added.

The Redwings will next take on either Los Banos or Atwater at a time yet to determined Wednesday from Coarsegold.
