Head-on collision kills one
emergency

A Subaru attempting to pass another vehicle on Santa Fe Avenue Thursday morning crashed head-on into another vehicle, resulting in the death of the Subaru driver, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The collision was reported at 6:32 a.m. Thursday on Santa Fe Avenue, south of Monte Vista Avenue in Denair.

The driver of the 1998 Subaru SUV, a 63-year-old Modesto man was headed northbound on Santa Fe when he attempted to pass a vehicle in front of him.

He moved into the southbound lane, directly into the path of a 2003 Toyota being driven by Trinidad Magana, 62, of Hughson.

The two vehicles collided head-on. The force of the impact pushed the Toyota backwards, causing it to crash into a 2002 Nissan that was traveling southbound on Santa Fe Avenue. Ricardo Gallegos, 48, of Modesto was driving the Nissan.

The Subaru SUV came to a stop straddling the north and south lanes and facing an easterly direction, said CHP spokesperson Officer Tom Olsen.

The Toyota sedan came to a rest west of the west road edge, facing east.

The Nissan SUV came to a rest partially off the west edge of the road and facing south.

The 63-year-old Modesto man was taken by ambulance to Emanuel Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. His name has not been released at this time.

Magana was taken by air ambulance to Doctors Medical Center with major injuries.

It’s unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision.

Gallegos was not injured, according to the CHP.

The CHP wants to remind drivers to only pass when it is safe to do so and when it is not a solid line and that the speed limit on an undivided highway is 55 miles per hour.
