Sheriffs investigate suspicious death at rest stop

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a suspicious death at a Turlock rest stop.

Around 8 p.m. Wednesday fire and medical personnel were dispatched to the Enoch Christoffersen rest stop area on northbound Highway (99 for a report of an individual in need of aid.

Emergency personnel rendered aid, but the individual was pronounced dead at the scene and law enforcement was summoned to the scene, said sheriff spokesman Sgt. Keith Rakoncza.

A cause of death was not immediately apparent. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday and the death has been deemed suspicious, Rakoncza said.

The identity of the victim, including if it was a male or female, was not being released by the sheriff’s department until family members could be notified.

The sheriff’s department was not releasing any other information about the death.

Wednesday’s death marked the third case of recent that has the sheriff’s department investigating a death with some local link. In all the cases very few details have been released.

On Feb. 19, Juan Jose Calvillo, 40, of Turlock was found fatally shot at the Horseshow Recreation area in Oakdale.

Calvillo died from a fatal gunshot, according to the sheriff’s department, but it is not yet know if it was self-inflicted or from another party. The shooting remains under investigation.

Though the deceased was found Feb. 19, the sheriff’s department did not release the news of the discovery until five days later.

The second case involved the shooting death of Oscar Nunez, 36, of Delhi. Nunez was found shot to death Sunday night in a small field in the 300 block of Olivero Road in an unincorporated area of Modesto.

Gunshots were heard about 45 minutes to an hour prior to the discovery of Nunez’s body.

No arrests have been made and no additional information has been shared by the sheriff’s department.

The sheriff’s department is asking for information on either case. Anyone with information on the death of Calvillo should call Detective David Hickman at 525-7042. Anyone with information on the murder of Nunez is asked to call Detective Lloyd MacKinnon at 525-7032.
