Fourth grade teacher Marlene Bergstrom of Medeiros Elementary School was named the 2014 Teacher of the Year by the Modesto Rotary Club and Stanislaus County Office of Education for the fourth through sixth grade division.

Bergstrom was nominated by her principal Jennifer Yacoub who stated that "At the end of the school year, students leave her classroom with renewed confidence in their academic abilities and a sense of self-efficacy in their social and self-development.”

Through a multitude of interactive activities in her classroom, , like life in the 1870s day, Bergstrom aims to make education fun and fulfilling.

This is the third consecutive year that a Medeiros instructor has been nominated for this award. As a winner, Bergstrom received $1,000 cash prize and a $500 Nasco gift card. She and the winners from the three other divisions — kindergarten through third grade, junior high and high school — will now undergo an interview process that will result in two teachers being selected to compete at the state level.
