Students in the Culinary Arts program at Pitman High School put their talents toward a worthy cause on Thursday, hosting a luncheon for eight veterans.

A meal of barbecued hamburgers, beans, fruit and cupcakes was cooked up by the class for their special guests, which Pitman senior Alex Carr served to Army veteran Dr. Wes Jacobs. Also, guests at the luncheon were Campus Supervisor Rudy Estrada and teacher Anthony Moreno, who are both U.S. Marine Corps veterans.

One veteran told culinary instructor Mohini Singh that while veterans receive a lot of special gestures, it “warms their souls” when a meal is cooked for them.

“I want my students to know the joy of serving people,” said Singh. “There are a lot of things you can accomplish through cooking, but when you cook something for someone and serve someone who has done something for our country, it means so much more.”
