Beer with a heart
Kokua beer event
Dust Bowl taprooms invite the community to come out in their best Hawaiian attire and support this special cause with a Kokua kickoff event starting at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Dust Bowl Brewing Co. is joining breweries across the nation to help raise money for the victims of the Maui wildfires.

In early August, wildfires swept across the island of Maui and killed at least 97 people, making it one of the nation’s deadliest natural disasters.

Dust Bowl will brew a special beer called Kokua, which translates to “help.” All proceeds from the sale of the Kokua Session beer will go toward the Maul Wildfire Relief Fund.

“Obviously, this is something larger than just Dust Bowl,” said brewery spokeswoman Michelle Peterson. “We’re super excited to be a part of this.”

Maui Brewing Company is pioneering this cause for brewers across the country to help those impacted by the wildfires. MBC has provided the Kokua Session beer recipe that hundreds of brewers across the nation will be serving in their tap rooms.  All proceeds are being distributed by Global Empowerment Mission.

“The Kokua Project will be one beer, brewed by many, to support our Maui Ohana who have been affected by this tragedy,” according to a statement issued by Maui Brewing Company.

“We are brewing their recipe for the Kokua Session beer now,” said Peterson. “It will be ready later this month. All proceeds from the sale of this beer in all our taprooms — Turlock, Monterey, Elk Grove and Livermore — will benefit those impacted by the fires.”

On Thursday all Dust Bowl taprooms invite the community to come support this special cause. “We’ll be featuring live music in the beer gardens and encourage Hawaiian attire to help spread the aloha spirit,” said Peterson. “We’d like to come together to celebrate beer for good.”

The festivities get underway at 4 p.m. and live music begins at 6.

The beer will be on tap while supplies last.

“It’s just the right thing to do,” said Brett Tate, who founded Dust Bowl Brewing Co. in 2009. “I’ve been there to Maui; we’ve all seen the pictures. It’s just unfortunate. But we’re proud to do it, and we’re happy to do it, and we’re going to do it.”
