Bicyclist injured in collision with big rig
emergency

A bicyclist out for a ride on a country road just outside Turlock suffered serious injuries after being struck by a semi truck on Monday.

The bicyclist, George Rohani, 56, of Turlock was taken by ambulance to a Modesto hospital with what the California Highway Patrol described as major injuries. Rohani’s nephew later posted on Facebook that he was in stable condition.

Rohani was riding his bicycle westbound on Greenway Avenue shortly before 6 p.m. Monday. As he crossed Lander Avenue he was struck by a semi.

The driver of the semi, Paulo Reis, 44, of Los Banos told CHP investigators he saw Rohani and tried to avoid the collision by braking and turning to the left, but it was too late.

The semi was traveling at an estimated speed of 15 miles per hour according to the CHP.

The intersection does have posted stop signs on Greenway. It’s unknown if Rohani had previously stopped at the sign or not.

Reis was not injured in the collision.

The investigation into the collision is ongoing.
