Merced County offers free bus rides amid federal shutdown delays

MERCED — In response to financial strain caused by delayed federal benefits, Merced County’s public transit system, known as The Bus, is offering free rides to all passengers on a temporary basis starting.

Transit officials say the move is intended to support residents struggling to meet basic household needs during the ongoing federal government shutdown.

“We know many of our passengers rely on The Bus for daily transportation,” said Serenity Anderson, Transit Director. “By offering free rides during this difficult time, we hope to ease some of the financial stress our community members are facing and ensure everyone can depend on us for reliable transportation, without worrying about how to pay for it.”

The Bus serves 13 communities across Merced and Stanislaus counties, with many routes connecting to food distribution sites. Paratransit services are available for qualified passengers by calling (209) 384-3111.

All vehicles are ADA-accessible and air-conditioned.

Funding for the free-fare program is limited. Riders who already qualify for free service under Measure V—including seniors, veterans, and ADA-eligible passengers—should continue to show their IDs. UC Merced and Merced College students must also present valid student ID cards to ride at no cost.

Service details, including routes, schedules, and real-time bus tracking, are available at www.mercedthebus.com and through The Bus Live app.

The Bus is administered by the Transit Joint Powers Authority for Merced County and managed by the Merced County Association of Governments.
