A young nature enthusiast is in the running to win a cash prize and wildlife experience with conservationist and TV show host Jeff Corwin.
Rowan Montoya, an 8-year-old Turlock native, is currently in the quarterfinals in the Ranger Rick magazine Jr. Ranger contest. The winner will receive $20,000, a wildlife experience with Corwin and appear in a Ranger Rick magazine article.
“Over the past several months, Rowan has dedicated himself to learning about wildlife, local ecosystems, hiking trails, and environmental stewardship through the Junior Ranger experience. What began as simple curiosity has turned into something truly meaningful for him. He approaches every outdoor
adventure with excitement, compassion, and a genuine desire to learn and protect the natural world around him,” said Rowan’s mom, Isleen Montoya. “As a family, we’ve spent countless hours exploring parks, studying native plants and animals, completing ranger activities, and encouraging Rowan’s confidence through hands-on learning in nature. His enthusiasm has inspired not only our family, but also many people online and within our local community who have followed along with his journey.”
Rowan said he enjoys learning about “protecting the planet and the wildlife” and if he wins the contest, the wild animal he would most like to see is a hedgehog.
When he’s not out in nature, Rowan likes playing baseball with the Turlock National Little League and playing on his drums and keyboard.
