Turlock’s most patriotic neighborhood

Don and Donna Ross at their Tartan Road home have started a patriotic decorating campaign in their east Turlock neighborhood (KRISTINA HACKER/The Journal).

If you’re having trouble finding small American flags to decorate your yard this holiday, it’s probably due to the efforts of the residents of Canterbury Estates. Residents of the east Turlock subdivision are aiming to be known as the “Most Patriotic” neighborhood in town.

George and Laurie Jenkins and Don and Donna Ross are the inspiration behind the Canterbury Estates’ patriotic decoration campaign (KRISTINA HACKER/The Journal).

Hundreds of American flags line the streets and walkways along Tartan Road, Willow Glen Way and Wyndfair Drive and many of the houses have standard size flags flying from poles in front of their homes and other red, white and blue decorations.

The brainchild of this patriotic effort is Don and Donna Ross, with help from their next-door neighbors Laurie and George Jenkins.

“We just moved here almost three years ago and I just got to thinking about Christmas Tree Lane here in Turlock and I though, well, maybe our neighborhood could be the most patriotic neighborhood in Turlock. And how would that work?” said Donna Ross.

She ran the idea by neighbor Laurie Jenkins and they both decided to bring up to the entire neighborhood at their annual Memorial Day block party.

Ross then went into overdrive with the American flags and even ordered special 250th flags to hand out door to door encouraging her neighbors to participate in the patriotic effort.

“It’s been so fun. Everybody’s kind of taken it and run with it,” she said.

Laurie Jenkins said that the 4th of July has always been a major holiday for her family.

“I’m a veteran and we’re really celebrating the 250th anniversary of our country,” said George Jenkins.

There is still a couple of weeks left before the big holiday and Donna Ross said every time she walks her dogs around the neighborhood she sees even more decorations going up.

Both the Ross’ and Jenkins’ hope the patriotic decorating will become an annual tradition and invites community members to drive through and view the displays.
