Finding time to visit the gym and work out regularly can be difficult, and it often requires eating on the go to make everything fit your schedule.

But traditional fast-food restaurants aren’t always the healthiest options.

ProteinHouse Turlock — 1858 Countryside Drive — provides another option to health-conscious eaters. It’s now open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“We had our soft opening this week,” said Cindy Joseph, store manager and co-owner with Mark Ponticelli. “We’ll have our official grand opening, with a ribbon cutting and all of that, at a later date. But we’re fully open and fully operational.”

Former Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler (2006-07, 2009-10) is slated to appear at the official grand opening.

“We’re not sure of the date because we’re trying to coordinate some things with Jay’s schedule,” said Joseph.

ProteinHouse offers burgers, salads, wraps, and acai bowls, featuring beef, chicken, fish, bison, and vegan options. There’s also a breakfast menu with pancakes, yogurt and fruit, items for kids, plus desserts and a bevy of protein shakes and Branch Chain Amino Acid drinks.

Joseph said ProteinHouse’s fresh ingredients are their calling card.

“All our sauces are made daily,” she said. “We’re really proud of that.”

Joseph worked for Ponticelli — owner of ProteinHouse restaurants in Modesto and Sacramento — for six years and was given the opportunity to become a partner in the Turlock venture.

“I worked as Mark’s assistant and he became a very close friend,” said Joseph, who grew up in Modesto but lives in Turlock. “He gave me the opportunity to get involved in this new venture here. He said, ‘Go and find locations for a Turlock store.’ I found this location, brought it to him, and we ended up meeting the owners and eventually signing a lease. It took a while, but we’re here now.”

ProteinHouse offers a 50 percent discount for first responders on duty, and a 15 percent discount when they’re off duty. Veterans and senior citizens will get a 15 percent discount, and members of select fitness gyms in town will get a 10 percent discount.

Joseph, who was a competitive cheerleader growing up and keeps busy these days with her German shepherd Max, said ProteinHouse isn’t just for bodybuilders and hard-core athletes.

“We cater to the entire community,” said Joseph. “Who doesn’t want to eat healthy when it tastes good, too? Why not choose something a little bit better for your body?”
