History of business:

For nearly two years, the space at 2922 Geer Rd. within the Blossom Valley Plaza in Turlock had been vacant since popular smoothie shop Green Grub moved across town to the Turlock Town Center. After months of construction, a new sweet shop has filled the space, and it’s one of a familiar name.

On July 15, Wendy Stuart, franchise owner of the Nothing Bundt Cakes location in Modesto, opened a Turlock store. Since the moment they opened their doors, the flow of customers has been constant, even without a large advertising push or grand opening celebration.

“We didn’t even have a grand opening just because we wanted to see what would happen if we just opened up the door, and we were very surprised on the turnout,” said general manager Vanessa Gonzalez. “We weren't anticipating quite the flow we were getting, thinking it was going to be more like a calm practice run, but no. Everybody was coming through that day, and it hasn’t really stopped.”

The bakery has a more than straightforward concept, selling nothing but bundt cakes – caked baked in a “bundt” pan – which are donut shaped with ridges. No matter what the cake consists of, as long as the shape is there, it’s considered a bundt cake.

“It’s literally just the shape,” Gonzalez said with a laugh. “That's what makes it funky and fun.”

Since there is no single recipe for these types of pastries, Nothing Bundt Cakes has compiled a menu of 10 year-round flavors and one revolving, seasonal flavor.

The 10 constants are: Chocolate chip, white chocolate raspberry, lemon, strawberries and cream, snickerdoodle, confetti, carrot, classic vanilla, gluten-free chocolate chip and the best-selling red velvet. This season’s special is lemon raspberry, with there being a pumpkin flavor on deck for autumn.

Like the flavors, size varies. Nothing Bundt Cakes offers their treats in personal, mini “bundtinis” size and full-sized cakes in 8 and 10 inches, which can also be purchased in a tiered presentation.

Now that a week of operations is in the books, Gonzalez explained that the business is looking to have a date for an official grand opening celebration and urged community members to keep an eye out. They also plan on further connecting with the community by helping with fundraisers, with their fundraising program kicking off in the coming weeks.

“We are all local,” Gonzalez, a Turlock native, said. “Wendy is from Ripon and Bri (manager Brianna Hamman) is from Modesto, so we’re all from around here and care deeply about the community, so we love it and can’t wait to watch it grow.”
