A Livingston woman ended her life Thursday by stepping in front of a freight train in Turlock.

Davinder Kaur, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Merced County Sheriff’s department.

Kaur parked her car near the railroad tracks at Golden State Boulevard and Griffith Avenue around 5 p.m. Thursday. Witnesses said Kaur was standing outside her car and was on her cell phone as the train approached, according to sheriff spokesman Deputy Tom MacKenzie.

As the train neared her position Kaur jumped onto the tracks, directly in the path of the train, MacKenzie said.

A search of her phone records indicated Kaur was on the phone with an account service.

“The number she called just prior to her death was an automated recording saying the account she was trying to access has not been activated,” MacKenzie said. “What account and where it was for is unknown.”

Kaur listened to the automated message for about three minutes before stepping onto the tracks.

The Merced Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office is awaiting toxicology results before completing the autopsy.
