June passed away peacefully Tuesday afternoon surrounded by family. She was born in 1922 in Richmond, California. Her grandparents were the originators of the Giant Oranges located along Highway 99 in the Central Valley. She spent her summers working alongside her family, squeezing oranges and making sandwiches.
Later she managed the Turlock Giant Orange. In 1940 she married the love of her life, Donald E Schmidt for Turlock. Eventually they bought a walnut ranch in Modesto where they raised their two sons, Bruce and Bob.
June was active in the First United Methodist Church in Modesto where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She enjoyed swimming, playing the organ, and sewing. Later in life she took up painting. She and Don also loved to go out ballroom dancing. Don’s job took them to several cities where they settled for a few years at a time.
They lived in various parts of the United States, including Texas, Missouri, Virginia and Southern California. They enjoyed sightseeing in each of those areas. They also traveled to Hawaii, Canada, China, South Pacific and Australia. After Don passed away on 2003 June moved to Turlock where she spent the last several years of her life.
She is predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Donald, and her grandson, Darren Schmidt. Surviving her are her son, Bruce (Donna) Schmidt of San Andreas, Robert (Brenda) Schmidt of Turlock, grandchildren Michael (Lynn) Schmidt of Oakdale, Megan (Joey) Silveira of Turlock, Kevin Schmidt of Langley, BC, and one great-grandson, Sage Schmidt of Oakdale.
The family wishes to thank Brandel Manor for their loving care of June for the past ten years. Their kindness will not be forgotten.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 2PM at Turlock Memorial Park. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations be sent in memory of June and Darren Schmidt, Special Olympics, 400 12th Street, #7, Modesto, CA 95354 or a favorite charity.
