Verena Preikschas and Katie Eng capped off their tremendous collegiate careers as champions as the pair won the Doubles title on Sunday at the 112th annual Ojai Valley Tournament.
Preikschas and Eng, the tournament third seed, defeated Concordia's Bettina Radke and Jordan Kimura, 6-3, 7-6. With the Warrior win, Cal State Stanislaus earned a share of the team championship in the college division. Teams earn points for each win in singles or doubles play. Cal State Stanislaus and Concordia each scored 17 points.
"I am so happy for Verena and Katie. It is a great way to go out, as champions in a prestigious tournament," head coach Verek Visaraga said. "They had a tremendous career and this really is a fitting way to end as winners."
The Warrior duo concluded their four-year career at Cal State Stanislaus with a 61-15 record as a doubles team. They went 5-0 at the tournament this weekend to end their senior season with 10 consecutive wins in 2012. Preikschas and Eng will likely earn the ITA All-American award as a pair for the second time.
"The younger girls, Kelsey and Davina, also had a great week both in singles and doubles," Visaraga said. "To win the team title with these four girls was also very special. This tournament will go down for me as one of the most satisfying accomplishments I was part of as a coach at CSUS."
Davina Meza, a freshman, advanced to the singles quarterfinal match. Junior Kelsey Chrisco and Meza played in the doubles round of 16 before falling to Radke and Kimura.
The championship is the Warriors' first in a major tournament. Annually the Warriors play at the Ojai Tournament at the conclusion of the regular season dual play schedule.
Radke defeated Preikschas in singles play on Saturday in the semifinal round in three sets.
