After a notable finish in 2009, the Cal State Stanislaus men’s cross country team has been ranked ninth in the recent West Regionals preseason poll by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The ranking is based on the Warriors’ 2009 campaign, one in which they were led by two-time all-California Collegiate Athletic Association runner Joey Nunes and Dawson Vorderbruegge, one of this season’s top returners.

Also in 2009, the Warriors notched eighth place at the NCAA regionals.

Defending West champion Chico State, led by Gary Towne, holds down the top spot in the regional rankings. Following the Wildcats are Western Washington, Alaska-Anchorage, Western Oregon and Cal Poly Pomona.

To help prepare for the 2010 season, the Warriors men and women runners will host and participate in the Running of the Warriors — a 5K run and walk — today starting at 9 a.m.

With the registration fee at $20, the fundraiser will benefit both Stanislaus cross country programs.
