Warriors begin golf season ranked 12th

To conclude last season, the Cal State Stanislaus men’s golf team finished sixth at the Division II National Championship under first-year coach John Cook. It marked the seventh time the Warriors earned a top six finish since 2000.
They want the same glory this season.
So far, the Warriors are off to a good start — though the season doesn’t officially begin until Monday, when the Warriors play golf at the Western Washington Invitational in Bellingham, Wash. Stanislaus enters the tournament ranked No. 12 in the first Golf Coaches Association of America poll.
The Warriors are one of five California Collegiate Athletic Association teams in the top 25 rankings, led by defending national champion Sonoma State, which begins the season at No. 5 after receiving seven first-place votes. No. 9 Cal State San Bernardino, No. 15 Chico State and No. 24 Cal State Monterey Bay are the other CCAA teams listed in the poll.
The Warriors return seven golfers, enough to expect that they could top last season’s national tournament qualifying team. The list of returners includes Teddy Schrier, who won a U.S. Amateur sectional qualifying event this past summer, as well as Danny Hoff, Bryan Kiss and J.T. Cockerill.
Georgia College is the top-ranked team in D-II.

Back at it again
After a two-week break, the Stanislaus cross country teams return to action by hosting the Stanislaus Invitational today at 9 a.m.
The last time the Warriors raced was at Sacramento State’s Hornet Jamboree, where they faced Division I athletes.
Dawson Vorderbruegge had Stanislaus’ best men’s 4-mile run, as he came in 13th in 20 minutes, 26 seconds, followed by Joey Nunes and his 16th-place time of 20:35.
Denali Foldager clocked 18:49 to finish 27th in the women’s 5K, and her twin sister, Rubye, had the team’s second-best showing at 19:27 to place 46th.
