Hilmar High's golf team hosted its annual Yellowjacket Invitational Monday morning at the Stevinson Ranch Golf Club where the 'Jackets finished 6th in team rankings out of an 11-team field.
“I thought that's about where we would be with the teams that were there,” Hilmar head coach Ty Pettigrew said.
Entering with a 2-0 record in the Trans Valley League, Hilmar welcomed a combination of familiar TVL opponents like rival Escalon High, as well as teams from outside the area such as Capital Christian and Benicia High.
“It's almost like a pre -season section tournament for us,” Pettigrew said. “It gives everybody a chance to see where they fall into place.”
Hilmar took the 6th spot in team standings with 471 strokes, while Capital Christian won the tournament with 395 strokes. Escalon finished a close second with 401 strokes.
Reigning TVL MVP Makena Azevedo finished 7th overall individually with a stroke count of 97.
“Her performance was a little out of character, she should have been lower than that, but last year she was our league MVP and I expect her to do the same this year,” Pettigrew said. “She just had a couple of bad holes.”
Kinsey Pettigrew swung her way into the 16th spot of Monday's individual rankings with a stroke count of 109—an 11 stroke improvement of her18-hole personal best.
“Kinsey had her best round of her career,” Pettigrew said.
