PREP ROUNDUP: Turlock, Pitman tennis and polo teams handed playoff losses

Pitman High boys water polo

The Pitman High varsity boys water polo team bowed out of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I bracket on Wednesday afternoon. In their match against the No. 4 ranked Raider of Rio Americano High (Sacramento), the No. 13 ranked Pride fell by a score of 27-12.

The Pride were playing catchup from the start as the Raiders jumped out to an early 8-3 lead after one quarter. It was more of the same from that point on as the Pride were outscored in each quarter. But scoring 12 goals against the Rio Americano squad in a losing effort may not be something the Pride will be ashamed of, as the Raiders had a dominant 20-9 record in the regular season against other Division I powerhouses and outscored opponents by a combined 158 goals this year.

Turlock High girls water polo

As the season came to an end for the Pitman boys, the girls squad of Turlock High experienced similar disappointment in the Sac-Joaquin Division I quarterfinals, this time in heartbreaking overtime fashion on Thursday.

The No. 5 ranked Bulldogs made the trip to Lodi to face off with the No. 4 ranked Lodi High Flames. For most of the game, the Flames found themselves with a lead, but a rally by the Turlock offense eventually put them ahead with only minutes to play in the fourth quarter.

With time running out, the Bulldogs were desperately holding on to a 12-11 lead and fending off Lodi’s offensive blitz. Finally, with three seconds left on the game clock, Lodi’s Emily Engle found the back of the net to tie the match at 12 goals apiece and force overtime.

Overtime began with a defensive struggle between both teams, as the match remained knotted up after the first overtime period. But on the very first possession for the Flames in the second overtime frame, Lodi’s Laine Woodard found the back of the net and sent her team to the semifinal round.

Turlock, Pitman girls Tennis

After impressive wins by both the Turlock High and Pitman High girls tennis teams in the opening round of their respective Sac-Joaquin Section brackets, both squads saw their seasons come to an end on the semifinal stage.

Things got started in the Division II bracket on Wednesday as the No. 9 ranked Pitman made the trip Roseville to take on the No. 1 ranked Timberwolves of Woodcreek High. The Pride would make the trip back to Turlock empty handed as the Timberwolves won all nine matches while only dropping a single set.

In the Division I bracket, the No. 8 ranked Bulldogs also had a date with the No. 1 ranked team, the Trojans of Oak Ridge High (El Dorado Hills). And like their crosstown neighbors at Pitman, Thursday’s semifinal match turned out to be a struggle for the Bulldogs as they fell by a score of 7-2.
