Cole Carrigg is no stranger to the national spotlight.

During his three years at San Diego State, the 2020 Turlock High graduate played several games on the Mountain West Network, CBS Sports Network and ESPN channels. In June, the 21-year-old was the topic of much discussion by MLB Network analysts after registering three throws of over 100 miles per hour at last year’s Draft Combine.

Carrigg will once again have a platform to showcase his talents as he was named to the Colorado Rockies’ inaugural Spring Breakout roster.

Spring Breakout is a new Major League Baseball initiative aimed at showcasing the top prospects of all 30 organizations. Each club has assembled rosters of 20 to 25 of their best prospects to take on fellow highly touted minor leaguers from other organizations. From March 14-17, sixteen nationally televised Spring Breakout exhibition games will be held across Arizona and Florida, with each lasting at least seven innings unless both teams agree to extend the contest to nine frames.

“Spring Breakout will provide a new opportunity to showcase the future stars of the game as they continue on their journey to the Major Leagues,” MLB chief operations and strategy officer Chris Marinak said in a December press release. “Our fans will get unique opportunities to meet our best prospects, get autographs and see the next generation of Major Leaguers up close. We are thrilled that Major League Baseball, Minor League Baseball and all of our Clubs are working closer than ever to grow the game and to shine a brighter light on our future All-Stars.”

Colorado’s lone Spring Breakout game will be March 16 against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, Scottsdale — the spring training home of the Rockies. The game is slated for 4:10 p.m. PST. It will be nationally televised on MLB Network, ESPN+, MLB.TV, MLB.com and the MLB app. Tickets are available for sale at www.mlb.com/spring-training/spring-breakout

Carrigg was a prime candidate for Colorado’s roster, as he is currently MLB Pipeline’s No. 8 ranked prospect in the Rockies organization.

A switch hitter who can play the outfield, middle infield and catcher, the Rockies selected Carrigg with the 65th overall pick in Round B of the 2023 MLB Draft. After beginning his professional career with 13 games in the Arizona Complex League, he was promoted to Single-A Fresno. In 23 games with the Grizzlies, the former Bulldog had a .376 batting average and a .931 OPS with 30 hits, 3 home runs and 16 RBI in 92 at-bats.

Carrigg did not receive a non-roster invite to Rockies major league spring training this season, but was briefly called up for a single game on Feb. 24 against the Oakland Athletics, though he did not see any time in the field.
