The Merced County Sheriff’s Department took a documented gang member into custody Friday night following a shooting in Delhi that took the life of one man and injured one woman.
Juan Carlos Gonzalez, 25, of Delhi was arrested Friday night on suspicion of murder for the deadly shooting, said sheriff spokesperson Sgt. Delray Shelton.
The identity of the deceased has not been released by the sheriff’s department.
The woman who was shot also was not identified. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Shelton said the shooting appears to be “possibly gang and drug related.”
The sheriff’s department was called to the 15000 block of Shell Street in Delhi around 11 p.m. Friday for a report of a shooting. At the scene the deputies found the man and the woman both suffering from gunshot wounds. The man was taken by air ambulance to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries. The woman was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Investigators learned that prior to the shooting the victims were involved in some type of altercation with a third person. The detectives were able to identify Gonzalez as a suspect in the case and with the use of the department’s SWAT team, he was taken into custody at a residence in the 6800 block of Hinton Avenue.
The sheriff’s department did not state if a gun was recovered at the Hinton Avenue residence.
The shooting remains under investigation.
