Body found in Hughson canal

The body of a Hispanic woman was found floating in the Ceres Main Canal near Hughson Monday morning.

The Sheriff’s Department has identified the woman as Maria Victoria Ortiz, 68, of Hughson. 

Stanislaus County Sheriff’s detectives were investigating the death to determine if she drowned or met with foul play. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Tuesday to determine the cause of death. 

Ortiz’s body was discovered floating face-down in the water at 8:03 a.m. Monday.

Patrol deputies assisted firefighters and paramedics with recovering the body near Tully and Hatch roads.
