Failure to stop at posted sign led to fatal crash in Keyes
emergency

A collision between a pickup truck and two big rigs in Keyes Monday afternoon resulted in the death of a 92-year-old man.

The deceased was identified as Javier Espinoza, 92, of Crows Landing.

The collision happened around 12:30 p.m. Monday at the intersection of E. Keyes Road and Foote Road.

Espinoza was driving a 1994 Ford pickup northbound on Foote Road, approaching the intersection with E. Keyes Road. Foote Road has a posted stop sign at the intersection, but for an unknown reason, Espinoza failed to stop and continued into the intersection, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The pickup struck the front of a 2015 Freightliner driven by Cesar Jimenez, 32, of Ceres. Jimenez was driving the Freightliner eastbound on E. Keyes Road.

The Freightliner struck the pickup truck on the left side and both vehicles continued in an easterly direction until coming to a stop. In the process, the Freightliner sideswiped a 2013 Kenworth that was making a turn onto Foote Road. The Kenworth was driven by Jose Rocha, 40, of Delhi.

Espinoza sustained fatal injuries from the collision and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Jimenez and Rocha were not injured, according to the CHP.

The collision caused a closure of E. Keyes Road from Highway 99 to Faith Home Road.

It’s unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol contributed to the collision.
