The 20-year-old woman struck by a car on Christmas night has died from the injuries she sustained, according to her family.

Jennifer Metzger was taken off life support and passed away Wednesday afternoon. Her family said she had been declared brain dead after the Monday night collision.

The collision happened around 9:45 p.m. as Metzger was crossing S. Center Street, just south of F Street. According to the California Highway Patrol Metzger was struck by a 2000 Toyota car after the driver, identified as Mario Ambriz, 53, of Turlock, failed to see her.

Initially, Ambriz stopped at the scene and his passenger, Riley Adam Dunn, 24, of Turlock got out of the car to check on Metzger, the CHP reported.

Witnesses said that as Turlock Police officers were arriving at the scene the passenger got back into the car and that it fled the scene. The first officer was able to provide other officers with a description of the car and the direction of travel it was headed.

A short time later officers stopped the car on Lander Avenue and took Ambriz into custody. He was found to not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to the CHP. He was arrested on felony hit and run charges resulting in death or injury. According to the records with the Stanislaus County Superior Court, he also was charged with unlawful to drive without a license. Ambriz has a current case open for being an unlicensed driver and failing to stop at a posted stop sign and a conviction from September for using a cell phone while driving.
