A pickup truck driver died from injuries he sustained after being hit by a Ford Mustang on Lander Avenue in Turlock on Wednesday night.

The driver of the Mustang fled the scene and is currently being sought by the Turlock Police Department.

The deceased was identified as Jose Mora, 55, of Hilmar.

The collision happened around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 1200 block of Lander Avenue.

Mora was driving a Nissan pickup truck south on Lander Avenue and was in the process of making a U-turn when he was struck by the Ford Mustang.

The Mustang also was traveling south on Lander Avenue and was moving at a high rate of speed, said Turlock Police spokesman Sgt. Russ Holeman.

Mora was found unresponsive, and personnel performed lifesaving measures on him until he was transported to a local hospital where, unfortunately, he succumbed to the injuries he received as a result of the collision.

Witnesses advised officers that the occupants of the Ford Mustang had walked away from the scene and were later picked up by another vehicle.

Turlock Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team responded to the scene and took over the investigation.

As M.A.I.T. is still in the early stages of this investigation, they have not yet determined fault or cause, however, it does appear that speed may have been a factor in this incident, Holeman said.

Investigators are processing evidence and working on leads in an effort to identify the driver and occupants of the vehicle.
