A 24-year-old Denair man sustained severe injuries and is in critical condition at a Modesto hospital after a collision Wednesday evening in Stevinson.
The name of the Denair man was not released. He was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Cruze, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision happened around 6 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Third Avenue and McCullagh Road.
The Denair man was headed westbound on Third Avenue, while a 1997 Honda Civic, driven by Steven Meza, 21, of Gustine, was on McCullagh Road.
According to the CHP, Meza said he didn't see the vehicle as he entered the intersection and the two cars collided. There is a posted stop sign on McCullagh Road, but not one on Third Avenue.
The impact sent both vehicles spinning off the road and into a metal fence and a power pole. The Honda caught fire, while the Cruze continued to careen off until striking a tree, where it came to a stop.
Meza got out of the vehicle quickly and was not burned from the fire. He was transported to Memorial Medical Center for minor injuries.
The Denair man was rushed to Doctors Medical Center.
The collision remains under investigation, though the CHP does not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the incident.
