The Turlock woman arrested for killing her daughter has entered a not guilty plea for the charges against her.

Brandy Devine, 25, is charged with murder for the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Stephanie Torres. Devine also is facing a felony count of willful cruelty to a child and a misdemeanor charge of using a controlled substance.

Devine entered the not guilty plea Wednesday at an arraignment hearing in Stanislaus County Superior Court. She is currently being represented by the Stanislaus County Public Defender’s Office.

Devine is being held at the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center in lieu of a $1 million bail. She has a pretrial hearing set for Sept. 7.

The child was found dead at a home in the 1100 block of N. Denair Avenue after Turlock police officers were called to the scene by emergency medical personnel, who were dispatched for a 911 call about a nonresponsive child.

Devine was later interviewed by investigators and was subsequently arrested. Her other three children were put into the custody of Child Protective Services.

A cause of death has not been released.
