Pregnant woman, unborn child killed in Turlock shooting

An early morning shooting in a Turlock neighborhood on Tuesday has resulted in the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child, the Turlock Police Department reported.

The victim has been identified as Amythest Rochelle Cortez, 27, of Gustine.

The shooting was initially reported as an aggravated assault around 1 a.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of Twentieth Century Boulevard.

The first officers to arrive at the scene found the woman inside a vehicle with at least one gunshot wound. The injury was described as life-threatening, said Turlock Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Parmley.

The woman was rushed to a local hospital, where she and her unborn child succumbed to their injuries and died, Parmley said.

The suspect or suspects had fled prior to officers arriving at the scene.

Detectives are actively investigating this case and are working on leads discovered in their preliminary investigation.
