Turlock man jailed for Modesto shooting

A Turlock man was arrested for a shooting in downtown Modesto that injured two men on Sunday.

Christian Magana, 20, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon following a brawl outside a Modesto eatery that erupted into gunfire. The Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office has charged Magana with assault with a firearm on a person and negligent discharge of a firearm.

Wounded in the gunfire were a 27-year-old Ceres man and a 24-year-old Manteca man. Both men were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of their gunshot wounds, which were not considered life-threatening, according to the Modesto Police Department. Another man sustained injuries from the fight at the scene, but was not shot.

Magana was taken into custody at the scene at identified by witnesses as the suspected shooter, said Modesto Police spokesperson Heather Graves.

The fight was reported around 1:50 a.m. Sunday outside the Urbano California Bistro on H Street.

Investigators were still trying to figure out what prompted the fight, which involved an estimated 40 people, according to the police department.

Magana remained in custody at the Stanislaus County Jail as of Tuesday. He is being held on a $50,000 bail.
