UC Merced to open doors to future Bobcats, community

Prospective students will get a chance to find out just what it is like to be a Bobcat at the University of California, Merced on Saturday during the university’s Preview Day, an annual event that invites the community to the research university campus.

 “Our goal is to give those students considering UC Merced an opportunity to get a feel for the campus,” said Juan Villegas, associate director of admissions and outreach. “UC Merced provides a unique experience, and we want students and their families to experience that firsthand before selecting us as their top choice.”

Throughout the day, attendees will get the chance to tour the campus, learn more about majors, meet staff and faculty members, check out housing, and hear from the deans in the university’s three schools: Engineering, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts. There will also be student entertainment provided by several UC Merced organizations will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We want them to talk to current students and professors,” said Villegas. “This event is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about UC Merced.”

Additionally, a number of representatives from admissions and financial aid will be in attendance to provide general information about the application process right before the priority filing period for fall 2016, which begins on Nov. 1. Prospective students can begin the application process online now at admissions.ucmerced.edu/how-apply.

 “UC Merced could possibly be there home for four years, even more if they stay for grad school,” said Villegas. “This is a prime time for them to see what UC Merced has to offer to them. This is a great opportunity to see if UC Merced is a good fit for them.

“We have great programs and we have great educators, but there are other things they need to consider. This will help them see if they can picture themselves on this campus,” continued Villegas.
