In loving memory of Gary, whose remarkable journey began on May 24, 1952, in Modesto, California, and concluded on September 12, 2026, following a brief illness. Born to Jimmie L. Jones and Betty L. Applegate Jones, Gary was predeceased by both his parents. He leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Gary’s life was a testament to the power of education and community service. He graduated from Grace Davis High School in Modesto and pursued higher education at Sacramento State University and Stanislaus State University earning a Bachelor’s degree. His passion for learning and teaching led him to obtain both teaching and administrative credentials, setting the stage for a lifelong career in education.
A dedicated educator, Gary served as a teacher, vice principal, principal, and assistant superintendent, touching countless lives and making lasting friendships throughout his tenure. His career took him around the world, spending a decade working abroad for the Department of Defense Schools, where he excelled both as a teacher and administrator. Closer to home, he made considerable contributions to the Denair, Turlock, and Hughson School districts and inspired future educators as an instructor at Modesto Junior College and Stanislaus State University.
Gary’s commitment to his community extended beyond the classroom. Upon retirement he joined the first class of Stanislaus Master Gardeners helping to establish the program in the county. As a member of the Oakdale Garden Club, he became one of the driving forces behind the Oakdale Community Garden spending countless hours into transforming the bare ground into a a place of beauty and fellowship that continues to nurtures plants and people alike. His efforts in community projects left a lasting impact, reflecting his generous spirit and unwavering dedication.
Gary’s greatest gift was his ability to make family, friends, and co-workers feel supported and valued. Although he never had children of his own, he cherished his role as an uncle to nieces and nephews, who held a special place in his heart. He is survived by his devoted sisters, Bonnie Jones-Lee (Alvin) and Karen (Steve) Bonzi, and their families, including nephews Hayden (Sarah) Lee, Aaron (Lindsey) Lee, Matt (Kelcey) Bonzi, and nieces Shannon (Seth) Tanner and Katie Bonzi and six great nieces and nephews . He also leaves behind cherished friends, their extended families and many others touched by his kindness.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the cancer floor at Memorial Hospital, Community Hospice, and the Alexander Cohen Hospice House for their compassionate care and support during Gary’s final days. Gary’s memory will forever be a guiding light, reminding us to live with kindness, passion, and a commitment to making the world a better place through community service. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him. A Celebration of Life will be held October 17, 2026 at the Community United Methodist Church of Oakdale at 1:00 PM.
