No shortage of Assembly candidates in 25th District

When State Senator Jeff Denham announced he would not seek election to the vacant 25th Assembly District seat, it opened the floodgates for a slew of competitors to step in.
Five Republicans — including former Turlock Vice Mayor Kurt Vander Weide — will now face off in the June primary for the seat currently held by Tom Berryhill, representing Modesto, Riverbank, Oakdale, and all of Calaveras, Mariposa, Mono and Tuolumne counties.
Vander Weide, who works as a district representative for outgoing U.S. Rep George Radanovich, will face off against Modesto Vice Mayor and California State University, Stanislaus Assistant Vice President for Communications and Public Affairs Kristen Olsen. Former Modesto City Councilwoman Janice Keating and Tuolumne County Supervisor Teri Murrison have also announced their intentions to file for candidacy, and on Thursday the 20-year-old Riverbank City Councilman Jesse James White announced he will run as well.
One Democrat, Angels Camp resident George Fry, has also announced his intent to run. Fry, a retired Calaveras County planner and California Youth Authority parole agent, failed in his bid for an Angels Camp City Council seat in November.
Candidates have until March 17 to file to run for the 25th Assembly District.
