Locals looking to equip themselves with summer sport necessities need look no further than Sunsports.

Located in Scandia Village, Sunsports has been a staple of Turlock since 1975. Individuals looking to gear up and get outside can find a range of outdoor activity equipment at Sunsports including paddleboards, kayaks, hiking and backpacking equipment, water boards, water skis, swim suits and accessories, skateboards and more.

“You’re not going to be bored walking in the door,” said owner Denis Sondeno.

While Sondeno has a multitude of lake and river activity equipment, a big season at Sunsports is the winter where local skiers draw on Sondeno’s industry expertise before hitting the slopes. Carrying top of the line brands like GoPro, the North Face, and Surftech, Sondeno said offering quality products that will last — and that have been tested — is key at his shop.

“We’re unique because when you walk in here, you get some real answers because I do most of these sports,” said Sondeno.  “We’ve been here doing this a long time so we can give you the background on what you’re looking for and we have actually used these items. We can tell you what they ski like and what they ride like.”

One thing Sondeno can also tell you about is swimming. Family owned since 1959, Sondeno also runs a swim school that trains all ages and levels, from three year olds to triathletes.

“We’ve taught a lot of people around here how to swim,” said Sondeno.

With classes already filling up, Sondeno said the swim school has remained successful over the years through word of mouth.

“We even teach the grandkids of our original clients,” he said.

Sondeno Swim School and Sunsports share the same telephone number so locals looking to sign up their little ones for swim classes or purchase new summertime activity gear need only call 634-2073.
