History of business: Following the 2011 closure of Borders, Turlockers have been without a dedicated new book store.

That changed Oct. 8, as The Bookshop Cafe opened in downtown Turlock, offering good coffee, good books, and a comfy place to enjoy both.

The business came to be when Beverly Willis decided to combine her love of books with her longtime dream to own a store. Willis wanted to open “something different,” combining a coffee shop with the new book selection she found lacking in Turlock.

“We don’t have any other bookstores in Turlock,” Willis said.

Business specialty: The Bookshop Cafe can be summed up in three words, according to Willis: Books, coffee, and Wi-Fi.

The shop specializes in new books, from all genres.

For drinks, The Bookshop Cafe serves Longbottom Coffee and Tea, a gourmet brand from Oregon. Cookies and oatmeal are available as snacks.

Big comfortable chairs abound to sit and read.

And the store also features a small selection of local, hand-made custom goods, like aprons.

“We like to promote local business,” Willis said.
