“Bernard” has the perfect weekend planned. His wife is headed out of town to visit her mother; his glamorous Parisian model mistress is set to join him at his estate in the French countryside; a gourmet cook has been hired, and his best friend is ready to provide him with the perfect alibi. What could possibly go wrong?
Well, pretty much everything.
French playwright Marc Camolette’s “Don’t Dress for Dinner” is the Valley Repertory Theater’s final production of its second season at the Denair Gaslight Theater.
Performances will be Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. (doors open 45 minutes before showtime). Tickets are $25 to $30 dollars and can be purchased at DenairGaslight.com/tickets.
According to director Casey Aviles, the comedic romp is part Three Stooges and part “Three’s Company.”
“I chose this play because I love classic comedies and I love French farces, and it has a great storyline to go along with it, as well,” said Aviles, the resident artistic director for VRT. “We want people to leave their worries at the door and laugh and have a really good time.”
David R. Soehnen plays Bernard, the amorous star of the play; Bavlina Youri plays Jacqueline, Bernard’s wife; Leiyah Russell plays Suzanne, Bernard’s Parisian model mistress; Christopher Nunes portrays Bernard’s pal Robert, who just happens to be having an affair with Jacqueline; Gabby Stokes plays Suzette, the Cordon Bleu chef; and James Perry plays George, Suzette’s husband. Trying to keep their stories straight becomes the goal … and dinner is the least of anybody’s concerns.
“We’ve been rehearsing for about seven or eight weeks,” said Aviles. “We started just before Labor Day. They’ve all been working very hard.”
“Don’t Dress for Dinner” is VRT’s fifth show with the Gaslight Theater – its most recent was Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” – and their next will be “Steel Magnolias” in May 2027.
