Ed Backman, 87, of Denair, passed away at Doctor’s Medical Center after extended illnesses. Ed was born at Emanuel Hospital in Turlock to Pete and Ruth (Alldrin) Backman. The family lived on Golf Link Road when Ed grew up. As a young man he had a job as a farmhand and he walked to a neighboring farm to milk cows. After graduating from Turlock High School, Ed joined the Army and served in Germany during World War II. After the war Ed returned to Turlock and married the love of his life, Harriet Carlson. Ed and Harriet had grown up together in the Evangelical Free Church of Turlock. They were married in the summer of 1946.
Ed worked in Real Estate and was Chairman of the Board of Realtors, was active in the Christian Business Men’s Committee. He was a lifelong member of the Evangelical Free Church in Turlock. He enjoyed horseback riding and vegetable gardening. He loved to deliver homegrown produce to Westside Ministries, Good Samaritan Ministry, Salvation Army, and Faith Home Teen Ranch.
As they had grandchildren, Ed liked to build scrapbooks for them – their school, FFA, 4H, and sporting events. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
Ed is survived by his wife of 66 years, Harriet Backman, son Dale (Mary Ellen) Backman of Denair, two grandchildren: Sarah (Mike) Curry of Hughson and James (Kara) Backman of Denair, three great-grandchildren, and three sisters: Elaine (Percy) Lueck, Clarice (Fred) Nelson, and Violet (Marshall) Alexander.
