Gladys Linnea Mathews,99, was born in March of 1915 to Jonas and Elizabeth Nyman in Wausa, Nebraska. The youngest of five children, she came to California with her family as a young woman and met Carl in Oakland and they married in 1936.  They were married for 50 years, ministering as church-planters to communities in the area and foothills. She was known for her kindness and generosity and welcomed visitors with coffee and her renowned baking and cooking.   She loved music, travel, collected dolls and wrote poetry. She lived in the Turlock area for 69 years and was a faithful member of Turlock Covenant Church, serving the community with her talents and prayers.  She died on Monday night, Oct. 20, 2014, at the age of 99.5 years. She will be profoundly missed. 

She is survived by 6 children; Ronald (Pat) Mathews, Mary Gail (Richard) Cripe, Sharon Brown, Anita (Dave) Leimone, Elizabeth Bernstrom and Patrice Mathews; 14 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews in Hilmar, Turlock, around the country, and in Sweden.  She is also survived by her dear sisters-in-law, Ellen Swanson and Joyce Logsdon.

  Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Carl Mathews; her brothers, Martin (“Mike”), Herbert and Hilmer (“Shorty”) Nyman, and by her sister Dagmar Johnson.  

 A Memorial service for Gladys will be held at Turlock Covenant Church on Thursday, November 6th at 12 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Westside Ministries, 950 Columbia Street, Turlock, CA 95380.  Please share your memories at
