This week, the top men’s and women’s teams from the California Collegiate Athletic Association will meet at Warrior Stadium for the league’s annual tournament. Unfortunately, the home teams — the Cal State Stanislaus men and women — will not participate.
But the show must go on.
A total of eight teams will visit Turlock and the Stanislaus campus starting on Thursday.
The first game starts at 11 a.m. Friday, as the four-team women field includes No. 1 Cal State L.A., No. 2 UC San Diego, No. 3 Cal State Dominguez Hills and No. 4 Chico State.
Cal State L.A. is also the men’s top team and the Golden Eagles are joined by No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino, No. 3 Cal State Dominguez Hills and No. 4 Sonoma State. The four-team men’s tournament begins at 4 p.m. Friday.
The women’s championship game is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, and the men’s title contest is slated for 2 p.m. the same day.
Stanislaus soccer squads conclude season with win, tie
Both Stanislaus soccer programs completed the season in style.
The women concluded the year in winning fashion, thanks to a late goal by Lisa Garcia that lifted the Warriors to 1-0 win over San Francisco State. That was Garcia’s 11th goal of the season, which came in the 82nd minute, setting a school record and surpassing the old mark of 10 by Marti Teunissen in 2005.
The win gave the Warriors a 10-9-1 overall record, making it the program’s eighth winning season in the last nine years. Stanislaus went 6-9-1 in the CCAA.
“This was a good way to end the season. SF State is a very hard place to play because they are tough and physical the surface is a challenge,” Warriors head coach Gabriel Bolton said. “We were very determined to play quality soccer but also be tough and physical. We accomplished both.”
The Stanislaus men did it in dramatic fashion.
Victor Regalado scored his league-leading 13th goal in the 36th minute to give the Warriors a 1-1 tie in the season finale against San Francisco State. The win gave Stanislaus a 11-6-2 overall, and a 8-6-2 league mark, the Warrior’s best record since joining the CCAA.
