Thirty-four years ago a Turlock High School sophomore named Scott Ladd gave his heart and soul to the game of basketball. Ladd’s life was cut short in a car accident, but his parents wanted to honor his memory and that is how the Scott Ladd Memorial Award came about.
The Scott Ladd Memorial Award is given to a player every year that best exemplifies the concept of teamwork.
“This award represents a player who is unselfish, (and strives) to better his team,” said Bulldog head coach Doug Cornfoot.
This year’s recipient of the Scott Ladd Memorial Award was senior Jeffrey Severson. His priority was the team and when he wasn’t in the game he was cheering the team on from the sidelines, said Cornfoot.
“This is the most rewarding achievement I have been awarded,” Severson said. “This is more special because it is in memory of someone.”
Every year the head basketball coach determines which athlete gives his “heart and soul to the game of basketball, is the spirit of the team, and gives 100 percent to every practice and game,” according to a letter from the Ladd family. “... This award honors his (Scott Ladd’s) successes.”
