The early stages of Friday night’s season-opening festivities at Joe Debely Stadium couldn’t be sustained by the Turlock High varsity football team.

The junior varsity squad had just pulled off a last-second, 25-21 comeback win against a visiting Rocklin program. And a ceremonial helicopter flyover during the marching band’s rendition of the national anthem had the paying crowd on its feet. The celebratory mood continued through the varsity kickoff as the Bulldogs took a 7-0 lead just two plays into its 2026 campaign.

But the Thunder struck back immediately and continued to roll often. By game’s end, Rocklin was all smiles after cruising to a 46-7 victory.

“When you play a tough team like Rocklin, you learn a lot from it,” said Turlock head coach James Peterson. Even if you get beat this bad, there are things to take away… We're playing somebody very, very good, and I think people who know football know that.”

Indeed, the Thunder are a consistent challenger for section championships, and have a roster littered with players fielding Division I college offers. And still, the Bulldogs had glimmers of good play and remained optimistic that the flurry of errors could be quickly corrected.

It began in the trenches with the play of junior defensive tackle Louie Martinez, who tipped a pass by Rocklin quarterback Parker Lively on the second play from scrimmage. The ball hung up in the air and landed in the hands of senior defensive end Michael Cardoso, who ran 31 yards for a pick-six. On the ensuing Thunder drive, Martinez contributed to four tackles, an effort that drew praise from Peterson.

“He's an animal,” the skipper said. “We love Louie. … He's just tearing it up down there. I love how big he plays. He's a fun guy to watch, just going crazy down there.”

From that point, consistent pressure from Martinez and his teammates did little to throw off an aerial attack from Lively and a steady dose of carries from a cast of Thunder runners.

Rocklin responded to Turlock’s early score with a nine-play touchdown drive that ended in the first of three passing touchdowns by Lively. In Turlock’s first offensive possession, hanging to a 7-6 lead, only four plays were run and five penalties were recorded. After a punt, only four plays were needed for the Thunder to find the end zone again, take a 13-7 lead and never look back.

Sandwiched in between Rocklin’s seven straight scoring drives, at the time still a 13-7 contest, was another forced turnover. Near midfield, Lively’s pass over the middle in the direction of wideout Dominic Ramirez was batted away by junior corner DJ Robertson. Senior Noel Garcia, an all-conference defensive back from a season ago, proceeded to make a diving interception. The momentum from the play came to a halt only 14 seconds later when the Bulldogs lost a fumble.

While Lively passed for 177 yards and three scores and six running backs combined for anther 190 on the ground, the Bulldogs mustered just 71 yards from scrimmage. Senior running back Braiden Fuentes, the reigning Central California Athletic League Offensive Player of the Year, made up most of that yardage against a Rocklin defense that swarmed him on nearly every play, He had just three touches in the first half and nine total, gaining 39 rushing yards on seven carries and four yards on two catches.

The large Thunder defensive line made it a struggle for Turlock starter Donnell Harmon III, who completed just three passes for eight yards and found himself on the ground nearly each time he dropped back to pass. He was able to scramble out of danger three times for 13 yards.

The main lesson Peterson wants his team to leave with from the lopsided loss is simple.

“Continue to play with courage. Don't give up. That's what we preach. That's life. It can hit you in the mouth at any moment… It’s about how you respond. What are you going to do? You can't give up.”

The Bulldogs will only have a limited amount of time to make the necessary corrections needed to earn the first win of the season as the program’s traditionally tough nonconference slate continues. The team will travel to play Clovis East in a unique Thursday night game this next week. The Timberwolves will enter with a 1-1 after beating Centennial by a 21-14 score Friday.
