The Denair High varsity boys soccer team and senior Isaac Starks have begun the year with a perfect 3-0 start in preseason play this week that ended with a 6-2 victory over Big Valley Christian on Thursday.

“We practice a lot, basically nonstop,” said Starks who scored four goals against Big Valley. “Once we start, we were asked if we wanted to take the easy or hard route and as a captain I took the hard route and this year is our year.”

Confidence has spiked through the roof since head coach Greg Gaudio took over the reins of the program.

His passionate ideas have transcended on to the pitch for the Coyotes, who have really stepped up their play.

In Monday’s season opener, Denair dominated Hughson 8-3 followed by a 3-1 win over Rio Vista on Tuesday.

Since then, Starks has notched eight goals over the span of three games.

“I work on scoring on my own time and continue to practice and that’s how you get better is practicing and my team has been tremendous,” Starks said. “Without them I would not be as successful or have all those goals I have so far.”

As captain, Starks reinforces what coach Gaudio has been trying to create.

“How you warm up is how you will play and we take it seriously and it showed throughout the game,” Starks added. “Our team is looking great and the amount of practice and time were working, it seems like were all playing like we want that playoff spot.”

Denair will be at Ripon Christian for tournament play which starts at 10 a.m. Sept. 12 against Ripon.
