Hilmar Yellowjackets
2009 record: 16-6 overall, 11-0-4 WAC
Head coach: Louie Bettencourt
Top returners: Haylee Bettencourt (forward), Riley Fielder (goalkeeper), Monica Pires (defender), Nina Arrigale (defender), Lexie Cico (forward)
Top newcomers: Alyssa McFaddin (forward), Morgan McFaddin (midfielder/forward)
Outlook: There’s no question that the Yellowjackets’ main objective is not only reaching the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V championship game for the third time in four years, but also winning it all. Last season’s attempt was short, thanks in part to not having a healthy Haylee Bettencourt — the team’s top scorer — because of a torn ACL in her left knee. The senior forward is not at full strength, but the Yellowjackets will need her to be competitive. There are also others who will be major contributors, such as returners as Riley Fielder, Monica Pires, Nina Arrigale and Lexie Cico.

Turlock Bulldogs
2009 record: 22-4-2 overall, 11-1 CCC
Head coach: Dennis Bishop (ninth year)
Top returners: Cassidy Costa (defender), Kaitlyn Ireland (defender), Sara Latham (forward), Kayla Avila (forward), Amanda Cervantes (midfielder)
Top newcomers: Shelby McLain (midfielder), Nicole Larson (defender)
Outlook: Once again, the Bulldogs are an ambitious bunch. They ended their 2009 season on a humbling note, losing in the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs and coming up short of making back-to-back appearances in the title game. But the Turlock players have the talent and experience to be a serious contender, with the likes of Cassidy Costa, Kaitlyn Ireland, Sara Latham, Kayla Avila and Amanda Cervantes back on the roster. The Bulldogs are looking unstoppable with a 7-0 record so far and winning their Central California Conference opener against Atwater on Monday.

Pitman Pride
2009 record: 10-9-1 overall, 6-5-1 CCC
Head coach: Oscar Mercado (first year)
Assistants: Christina Garcia and Cesar Mercado
Outlook: In his first year, coach Oscar Mercado says every one of his players on the roster will play key roles in this season’s Pride team. He welcomes back a group that barely missed the postseason in 2009. “Every player plays a key role in the development of the team,” Mercado said. “We hope to play great soccer and have a successful season.”

Denair Coyotes
2009 record: 2-18 overall, 2-13 SL
Head coach: Daniel Romero (second year)
Top returners: Annissa Turpin (goalkeeper), Leslie Rodriguez (forward), Tanya Duarte (forward), Madison Bettencourt (defender), Jordan Flatt (midfielder), Yazmin Garcia (midfielder), Stacy Silva (midfielder), Irene Gutierrez (defender), Cortnee Kinserson (forward)
Top newcomers: Chelsea Wooten (defender), Illiana Rangel (defender)
Outlook: The Coyotes have a mixture of returning players and incoming talent, and coach Daniel Romero expects to have a competitive season. Arguably, the top returner is Annissa Turpin, the goalkeeper who had 71 saves and two shutouts during her sophomore season in 2009. A lot of last season’s players will return to give Turpin support, though there will also be a number of newcomers. “We have a lot of newcomers this year,” Romero said, “and look to build upon our youth this year.”

Turlock Christian Eagles
2009 season: 7-12 overall, 6-9 SL
Head coach: Shirely Brand
Outlook: The Eagles will look to improve from last season, but that might take some adjustment. Gone are Tiffanie Snyder and Emily MacLaren, Turlock Christian’s top two scoring threats from last season. MacLaren is now playing for the Biola University women’s soccer team. But this group of Eagles return some of last season’s contributors and hope to build on that experience.
