Pitman’s Pride Cup, Turlock’s Bulldog Classic set for this weekend

Two 20-team tournaments will be happening this weekend on each side of the city.

Starting Friday, Pitman High will host the Pride Cup, a two-day soccer tournament that features 10 games on both Friday and Saturday.

Then, starting on Saturday at 9 a.m., it’s the Bulldog Classic wrestling tournament, with championship matches expected to start at around 4 p.m.

“It’s a good starting point for us,” said Turlock wrestling coach Mike Contreras. “Nothing too stiff, but it’s a good way to get a gauge on how we’re looking so far.”

Defending Sac-Joaquin Section 138-pound champion Isaiah Bertolotto and brother Jeremiah Bertolotto (132) — the Central California Athletic League’s most valuable player in football this fall — were both were state qualifiers last season. However, both are nursing nagging injuries and will not be in action this Saturday.

Turlock 182-pounder Eli Watson, the Bulldogs’ third state qualifier from a season ago, will be looking to win another Classic title, this time in the 215-pound weight class.

Contreras moved the Classic from early January, where it competed with Escalon’s popular two-day tourney, to the first week in December.

“We switched it to this weekend so that we’re the only local (wrestling) tournament,” said Contreras.

Pitman’s soccer tournament will take place at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex, 4545 N. Kilroy Rd., with the championship game being played Saturday at 2:45 p.m. at neighboring Pitman High.

Friday’s schedule is as follows: Central Catholic vs. Pitman (Field 4) and Beyer vs. Delhi (Field 5) at 9:30 a.m.; Atwater vs. Pacheco (Field 1) Galileo vs. Central East (Field 2), and Enochs vs. Edison (Field 3) at 11:15; Delhi vs. Pitman (Field 3), and Central Catholic vs. Beyer (Field 4) at 1 p.m.; followed by Central East vs. Edison (Field 3), Pacheco vs. Galileo (Field 4), and Atwater vs. Enochs (Field 5) at 2:45.

Saturday’s slate features Central Catholic vs. Delhi (Field 5), and Beyer vs. Pacheco (Field 4) at 9:30 a.m.; Edison vs. Pitman (Field 3), Atwater vs. Central East (Field 4), and Galileo vs. Enochs (Field 5) at 11:15.

In conjunction with the championship game, four consolation games will be played at 2:45 at the Sports Complex on fields 1, 2, 4 and 5.
