Pitman High's girls wrestling program enjoyed individual and team success while competing at the Super Girl Showdown on Friday at Ceres High School.
Denair High's lone grappler gained valuable experience at the 30-team event.
Four of Pitman's 10 wrestlers took home medals, including Lily Dizon, Lexie Capote, Lindsey Carolan and Patricia Bray.
"All of our girls wrestled well today," Pitman head coach Adam Vasconcellos said. "The matches we were supposed to win, we won."
Dizon claimed the 100-pound championship.
The freshman posted a 3-0 record.
Dizon collected wins versus Modesto High's Emolette Pineda (pin, 0:43), Monache's Bailey Hoard (pin, 3:00) and Sanger's Jenniyah Duarte (major decision, 13-0).
"A lot of people have trouble scoring points against Lily," Vasconcellos said. "She's a stud freshman. She's at another level."
Capote captured the 105-pound title.
The senior posted a 3-0 record.
Capote collected wins versus Beyer's Alexa Juarez (pin, 0:52), Pacheco's Alexandra Loretto (decision, 6-2) and Monache's Sierra Alamilla (pin, 1:53).
"Lexie's on a mission," Vasconcellos said. "It's her last year. She wants to try to make the State finals."
Carolan finished second in the 140-pound weight bracket.
The sophomore posted a 3-1 record while competing at her first varsity tournament.
"She earned her first varsity letter today," Vasconcellos said.
Carolan collected wins versus Monache's Desiray Metz-Fugate (pin, 2:43), Merrill West's Jessica Santos (pin, 0:15) and McQueen's Katlynn Sibrian (pin, 1:43).
She lost to Central Valley's Giana Breshears (decision, 8-1).
"Lindsey's only wrestled for a month," Vasconcellos said. "She keeps shocking everybody. She works hard and loves the sport."
Bray finished third at 110 pounds.
The freshman posted a 4-1 record.
"For her (Bray) to take third is pretty awesome," Vasconcellos said. "She's a fighter. She's tough. She outwills people."
Bray collected wins versus Central Valley's Jayden Corona (pin, 5:59/decision, 3-0), Livingston's Janet'v Baptista (pin, 2:45) and Davis' Kaliah Vann (decision, 6-0).
She lost to McQueen's Bella Cornado (pin, 2:47).
Pitman freshmen Melanie Delgado, Shyla Volk-Wood, Victoria Bucio, Moragan Williams, Alexis Rivas Ayala and Madalynn Castillo all made their varsity debuts.
Delgado posted a 1-2 record at 115 pounds.
Her lone win came against Buhach Colony's Sophia Romero (pin, 0:41).
Volk-Wood posted a 1-2 record at 135 pounds.
Her lone victory came against McQueen's Bridget King (pin, 1:08).
Bucio (115 pounds), Williams (120s), Rivas Ayala (135s) and Castillo (135s) posted 0-2 records in their respective weight classes.
"They've never wrestled a varsity match," Vasconcellos said. "They're gaining experience."
Pitman placed sixth as a team with a score of 107.
Sanger (193), Livingston (184), Central Valley (116), Monache (108.5) and Pitman (107.5) took first, second, third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Pride could have finished higher in the standings.
"We only had three of our varsity girls wrestling today," Vasconcellos said.
The Austin sisters of Pitman, Gabby and Baya, did not compete at the Super Girl Showdown.
Gabby, a junior, and Baya, a sophomore, both placed second at the CIF State Meet last season.
Vasconcellos wanted to limit their match count heading into bigger tournaments.
"We gave them the day off," he said. "They'll come back after Christmas."
Denair High freshman Brianna Thomas compiled a 2-2 record in the 170-pound weight class.
Thomas won two of three matches after opening the tournament with a loss.
She collected wins against Beyer's Angelique Murillo (pin, 2:41) and Modesto High's Kaden Vilveros (pin, 3:12).
Thomas lost to Waterford's Serenity Dalton (pin, 4:27) and Livingston's Jessica Gomez (decision, 8-1).
"We want to get her as much mat time as possible this season," Denair head coach Bryan Herrington said. "She just started wrestling. She has very little experience. With her drive, the ceiling is high. She's very driven. She asks a lot of questions."
