A man suspected of robbing a Turlock convenience store of cigarettes was taken into custody Thursday night.
Tommy James Ortiz, 38, of Turlock, was booked into Stanislaus County Jail and charged with robbery and destruction of police property. The destruction charge was added when Ortiz tried to kick out a patrol car window, said Turlock Police Lt. Jeff Lopes.
The robbery occurred around 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Circle K store at 1600 W. Main St.
The robber brandished a knife and told the clerk to give him the money in the register. When the clerk couldn’t open the register, the robber settled on two packs of cigarettes instead, Lopes said.
About an hour later, a suspect matching the robber’s description was detained not too far from the store, Lopes said.
The suspect, Ortiz, was positively identified by the clerk as the robber, Lopes said.
