A Delhi man has died from injuries he sustained in a head-on collision with a big rig Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Russell Robinson, 53, of Delhi.

The collision happened around 1:45 p.m. Tuesday on Bradbury Road, near the intersection with Golf Link Road in Delhi, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Robinson was driving a 1998 Dodge ram westbound on Bradbury Road, when for an unknown reason he allowed the vehicle to drift into the eastbound lane.

Joao Azevedo, 32, of Merced was driving a 2012 Peterbilt Tractor, with two fuel tankers attached eastbound on Bradbury. CHP spokesperson Officer Eric Zuniga said Azevedo saw the truck come into his lane and slowed his truck down to 24 miles per hour, but because of the surrounding terrain, he had “no other options to take for evasive action,” Zuniga said.

The Dodge struck the left front of the big rig, causing significant damage and leaving Robinson pinned inside his vehicle.

Emergency personnel extricated Robinson and he was taken by air ambulance to Doctors Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

It does not appear that alcohol and/or drugs played a factor in the collision, Zuniga said.

Both parties were wearing seat belts.

The collision remains under investigation.
