A gruesome scene greeted California Highway Patrol officers Saturday morning when four horses were killed on a rural road west of Turlock.
Four horses wandered onto Crows Landing Road near W. Tuolumne Road and were struck by a passing van and big rig around 4 a.m.
The big rig was traveling northbound and struck two of the horses. The van was headed southbound and hit the other two, according to the CHP.
The horses were all euthanized at the scene.
The road was closed for about 90 minutes after the accident.
The horses came from a pasture less than a mile away from the accident scene.
No other injuries were reported.
