Pedestrian struck, killed crossing Lander
emergency

A woman walking across Lander Avenue Wednesday was struck by a pickup truck and died from her injuries, the Turlock Police Department reported.

The deceased was identified as Martha Barajas, 66.

The collision was reported at 4:54 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Lander Avenue and Ninth Street.

Barajas was crossing Lander Avenue eastbound in the crosswalk when she was struck by a pickup that was headed northbound.

An off-duty nurse witnessed the collision and quickly began performing CPR on the woman while emergency responders were enroute to the scene.

Officers took over CPR briefly, until relieved by firefighters with the Turlock Fire Department. Barajas was transported to a local area hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

The driver of the pickup is a 43-year-old male, who remained on scene and is cooperating with this investigation. The involved pickup, a dark colored GMC Sierra, was towed from the scene to be processed for evidence, which is standard protocol.

“The Turlock Police Department is still in the early stages of investigating this collision, however, officers can say alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in this collision,” said Turlock Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Parmley.

The roadway was closed for nearly three hours while officers investigated this incident, obtained statements and collected video evidence.
